At the full meeting of Somerset county councillors this week, Rita Taylor who represented the association 'Roadpeace' asked for, and was given reassurance that the county council will not remove speed cameras in a misguided attempt to make a budget saving.
News that Conservative-led Swindon Borough Council had decided to remove cameras in order to reduce costs alarmed many people who have lost loved ones in road accidents caused by excessive speed. They have expressed their views in the media and the police have also raised their concerns that other councils shouldn't follow Swindon's example.
Cllr. Henry Hobhouse, Portfolio Holder for Community Safety was therefore anxious to make the following statement at the council meeting:
"I would like to reassure Rita Taylor that this council, under its present administration, has no intention of removing any of the safety cameras from the Somerset Partnership."
