Dear Editor,
So far we have collected over seven hundred names on the petition to save West End Post Office.
We believe that between 700 and 1,000 people use West End every week. We need the rest of you to sign up to Save Our Post Office. Your best opportunity is to come to one or both of the public meetings this Friday 7th March Friday night at the British Legion, Farm Road. 5.45pm to 6.30pm and 6.45pm to 7.30pm. The bar will be open for coffees and refreshment.
Should West End PO be saved? Most definitely. Can it? Yes - around 480 new houses are being built in Street in the near future and 400 will be exactly opposite West End Post Office and the remainder up at Brookfield Road. This constitutes new development and will be taken into account.
To close West End would mean intolerable pressure and queues we have never seen before on the Post Office in Martin's News in High St.
Queues for the post office, mixed up with customers trying to get greetings cards, CDs and DVDs, will be out the door and around the block and customers will be left waiting in the cold and wet for ages.
We have invited the local Wells MP to Friday's meeting. So it will be an opportunity for him to add his name to the 700 names and to explain his time when in government in supporting Post offices across the country.
During the Conservative's period in office (1979-97) the number of Crown post offices fell from 1,580 to 606 and the number of sub-post offices fell from 21,213 to 17,731 (down c.3,500).
During the last six years of Conservative government 1,400 sub-Post Offices closed. We welcome David Heathcoat-Amory's support for Street's case but would like an explanation of what he has did when in power.
Both Cllr Peter Andrews, as a member of Postwatch, and I will be there on Friday. Join us at the Legion and show your support.
Cllr Jim Mochnacz
Councillor for Street
