Alvin joins the Town Criers in the centre of Taunton
Somerset is leading the country's Broadband revolution as nearly half of all the county's homes and businesses are now connected to high-speed technology. This represents more than 115,000 customers. Figures released by BT show that Somerset has the highest take-up rate and is ahead of Cornwall (with 46.3%) and Oxfordshire (45.1%).
Alvin Horsfall paid tribute to 'Connecting Somerset', the partnership led by the County Council & involving other private and public sector partners, which played such a vital role in helping local firms to make the most of the technology. Alvin said: "This is a really fantastic achievement, particularly as we've moved from being the 'worst connected' in the South West, to 'best in the country' in only three years!"
To illustrate how far communications have moved on, town criers from across Somerset gathered in Taunton (the county town) to announce the news to local people and to warn those who weren't connected, that they'd get left behind!
