Somerset County Council, under the leadership of the Liberal Democrats, has been awarded the top 4 star rating for the second year in a row. Even better, government inspectors judged the council to be in their top category, 'improving strongly'. This means the new flag flying outside County Hall will have the four stars followed by a plus sign, as the council has actually improved on 'excellent'.
The Government's Audit commission look at how the Council is run, how its services perform and most importantly, the value for money it offers. Somerset CC was particularly praised for the quality of services the residents receive, including; Waste, Adult Care, Youth Services and Highways.
Liberal Democrat-run Somerset County Council is the only authority in the South West to be awarded the two highest accolades and one of only thirteen authorities in the whole country.
The report recognises the much-valued commitment of the councillors with phrases such as; "Councillors and Senior Managers are capable and visionary" and "Councillors are capable and energetic".
Council leader Jill Shortland commented on the news:
The Lib Dem group enjoy the moment!
"To receive the highest possible rating in both categories of the assessment is wonderful news. This judgement recognises the quality services we provide as leading the way, not only regionally, but nationally too. The interaction between the councillors and all council staff is a big factor in our success."
