The Liberal Democrats on Somerset County Council have just heard that Key Stage 2 pupils have achieved their best ever results in English and Maths. The latest news also shows that Somerset's primary schools are improving faster than in neighbouring counties.
The results mean that 81% of all eleven year-olds have reached the level they hoped for in their English tests this summer and for the first time, they've also exceeded the national average. There has also been significant improvement in the pupils' writing.
All in all, one hundred schools have equalled or bettered their results this year and the Liberal Democrat group are delighted with this news.
Gloria Cawood, who is the Portfolio Holder for Education, commented on the news: "Our schools are committed to raising standards and doing the best for the children in their care. I am delighted with the results and I'm very grateful for the hard work of teachers and support staff in helping the pupils to do so well. Parents' support is also vital and I thank them too."
